Teviot 2014

In keeping with the domestic as subject, Teviot was a prolonged study of the light and shadow in my home. I had just moved in with my future husband to his flat on Teviot Street in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and was drawn to the simple architecture and immense light of the space. These cyanotypes were a way for me to record the light over time in my new domestic setting. I used hand-coated light sensitive cyanotype paper to create compositions of marks made by the light and shadow entering the windows. A solution of tannic acid and bleach was applied after the initial cyanotypes were produced in order to tone the prints, lending deeper brown, pink, indigo and black hues, rather than the signature cyan of the cyanotype. The toned hues reminded me of my experience seeing the light of our home at night.
