Red Curtain 2010

With my domestic world as subject, the work for Red Curtain, alters the typical view through my 2010 bedroom curtains to create a fictional atmosphere of soft deep reds, magentas, purples, and bright pinks. Presented as an unedited film strip, I wanted to emphasize a passage of time, a transitory experience through shifting hues and subtle soft compositional movements. Using a toy Holga camera that was designed in the 1960’s as an inexpensive camera for the masses, I embraced the inherent soft focus, vignetting, and occasional light leaks that this camera is known to create. To achieve the color intensities of the depicted curtain, I positioned various colors of theatrical lighting gels in front of the camera lens as I was photographing.
